While online shopping has steadily continued to grow over the years, the recent Covid pandemic and stay at home orders have caused it to absolutely explode and postal carriers are directly impacted contending with more volume, heavier packages, and longer shifts. Simply put, the job is physically taxing and as a result, injuries are on the rise. The Government Accountability Office reports 34,000 injuries a year.  Our physical therapists at Therapy Unlimited do a lot more than stretching or strengthening weak muscles after an injury or surgery. They evaluate and diagnose many problems before they lead to more serious injuries or even disability. They also help with managing pain. Which is why adding physical therapy to your life as a postal worker would benefit you in the future and help prevent serious consequences for not listening to your body.  Common injuries include but aren’t limited to:

  • Torn Rotator Cuff due to carrying sling bags full of mail
  • Knee Injuries due to repetitive bending

It is important NOT to ignore signs and symptoms of injury including: pain, tightness, loss of range in motion or use, and/or or swelling.

For injuries that are non-emergent, consider seeing a physical therapist! Most insurance plans cover physical therapy including claims filed with the Department of Labor.  Physical therapy is also now covered under Direct Access – meaning you don’t need a referral to initially see a PT – you’re entitled to 10 visits within 21 days before needing a prescription. Some of the benefits of physical therapy for injuries sustained on the job or as a result of the job are as follows:

Aquatic Therapy Benefits:

  • Warm water immersion increases blood flow to the muscles up to 240%
  • Buoyance provides a weightlessness to joints which allows greater movements due to decreased compressive forces and pain
  • Muscle strengthening through resistance due to the “drag” of the water
  • With increased support from water, patients often have a reduced fear of falling and can safely be challenged to improve gait and balance
  • Reduction of swelling and inflammation
  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Core strengthening is one of the most important goals of rehabilitation.  Working on specific exercises in a pool will naturally work a person’s balance and core strength and when combined with land-based therapies, aqua therapy can be a valuable tool for increasing a player’s muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, and sport-specific mechanics (ie: pitching mechanics).
  • In general, aqua therapy allows for more rotation, improved circulation, improved balance and provides the resistance needed to challenge and strengthen muscles. Further, because the water is a natural shock absorber, players won’t feel as sore or stiff after an aqua therapy session as they could after a traditional aerobic gym workout.
